{"id":187,"date":"2021-02-08T16:49:01","date_gmt":"2021-02-08T08:49:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gochambers.com\/globalupdates\/?p=187"},"modified":"2021-02-08T16:49:01","modified_gmt":"2021-02-08T08:49:01","slug":"harris-yellen-meet-with-black-chambers-of-commerce-members-in-virtual-roundtable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gochambers.com\/globalupdates\/regions\/south-america\/harris-yellen-meet-with-black-chambers-of-commerce-members-in-virtual-roundtable\/","title":{"rendered":"Harris, Yellen meet with Black Chambers of Commerce members in virtual roundtable"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 Vice President Kamala Harris and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen met with Black Chambers of Commerce members in a virtual roundtable on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"WATCH LIVE: Harris, Yellen meet with Black Chambers of Commerce members in virtual roundtable\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fR2Kp1vay20?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch the roundtable in the player above.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yellen warned of \u201ctough months ahead\u201d with COVID-19 continuing to flare, making it critical that Congress pass President Joe Biden\u2019s $1.9 trillion relief package.<\/p>\n<p>In her first public interview since becoming Treasury secretary last week, Yellen said that Biden is willing to cooperate with Republicans to pass the measure on a bipartisan basis.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats in Congress have signaled, however, that if GOP support is not forthcoming, they are prepared to pass the measure with only Democratic support.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the House passed on a nearly party-line vote a budget bill that would allow special rules to be used in the Senate to pass the relief bill by a simple majority rather than the 60 votes needed for most bills in the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is really an urgent need and we need to act big,\u201d Yellen said Thursday on ABC\u2019s \u201cGood Morning America. \u201cWe\u2019ve got some tough months ahead\u201d until we get control of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Asked how it feels to be the first woman to serve as Treasury secretary, Yellen, was also the first woman to lead the Federal Reserve, said that the legacy she seeks is in the passage of a coronavirus relief measure.<\/p>\n<p>America faces \u201can economic crisis that is as serious as I have seen in my lifetime,\u201d Yellen said. The goal, she said, is to ensure that \u201cAmericans don\u2019t suffer needlessly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Contributing to the passage of a relief bill, which she said by some estimates could reduce childhood poverty by 50 percent, would be \u201ca great legacy for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/9Acw8knJwyXltSXqTL9EZw--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU3Ni4zMDc1NjkwODI4OTk1\/https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/uu\/api\/res\/1.2\/z4N4hG2i1CskSqbxJr7zaA--~B\/aD0yOTk4O3c9NDk5NDthcHBpZD15dGFjaHlvbg--\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/ap.org\/8b040428b84e503a3bfe81d34c8cf722\" alt=\"Image result for WATCH: Harris, Yellen meet with Black Chambers of Commerce members in virtual roundtable\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yellen also spoke about recent stock market trading turmoil that pitted smaller, online investors against massive hedge funds.
