The Italian Chamber of Commerce in Morocco has been present in Casablanca for over a hundred years. Its statute was approved on July 16, 1916 at the end of the Constitutive General Assembly.

The aim that was set was the promotion of commercial and industrial relations between Italy and Morocco; to intervene in the study of every legislative, commercial and industrial question that interested the two countries; to keep Italian companies updated on any useful information regarding trade with Morocco; to facilitate the flow of information on Italian labor; and finally, to represent and encourage Italy’s commercial interests on any occasion.

The Chamber was made up of different types of members. In addition to the founding members, Italian citizens residing in Morocco, who enjoyed civil and political rights and who were traders, industrialists or freelancers, could become effective members; Italian or foreign citizens who manage Italian companies established in Italy or abroad; the recognized representatives of Italian interests. The adhering members could be foreign partners of Italian companies, associations and legal persons who were interested in the development of commercial relations between Italy and Morocco. Effective members and adherent members differed in membership fees and cost of the services offered.

The management of the common fund of the Chamber was entrusted to a Board of Directors composed of members by right, including the Royal Consul of Italy, and 11 elected members, including the President and the Vice President. For the functioning of the Chamber, the Council provided a fund fed by the contributions of the members established by the statutes, the amount of the taxes of the Chamber established by the regulations and any assignments by the Government, the Chambers of Commerce and others.

The Italian Chamber of Commerce of Casablanca acquired in 1933 its current name of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Morocco following an amendment to the statutes. The same amendment also established the posts of Secretary and Treasurer and introduced a new source of funding, the sale of advertising space within the Chamber’s publications.

The outbreak of the Second World War forced the Chamber to cease its activities for a decade. However, the urgency to rebuild the post-war Italian economy and the desire to defend the interests of the Italian community in Morocco prompted Consul Agostino Benazzi to call a meeting in February 1950 with the aim of reactivating the Chamber.

On 9 March of the same year, the new board composed of the president Giulio Paloschi, the vice-presidents Francesco Tripiano and Francesco Sidoti, the Treasurer Luigi Barber, and the directors Mario Lensi, Giuseppe Privitera, Amedeo Sgambella, Andrea Santagata and Natale Macchi set to work to relaunch the activities of the Chamber in favor of its members.
