Established in 1920, the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce has been making businesses its business for 100 years. Recently, the Chamber’s board of directors hired Ray Smith as the new director, and he has been busy meeting with current and prospective members. He’s working with the board on ways to attract more members, as well as implement new ideas to recruit new businesses and retain existing ones.

An open house sponsored by the Chamber was held on Thursday, May 20, at Stonewall Resort. The open house was open to current and prospective chamber members, as well as the public. Refreshments were provided by the resort.

“The one thing that made it nice and worked well is that several members got to talk who never really get the chance. I hope connections were made that might not have been there before, which can only work to the benefit all of Lewis County,” Smith said, adding he felt it was successful, and he appreciated the hospitality the resort staff provided.

To highlight your business or organization, contact Smith about setting up at the open house and get information on joining the Chamber.

Following the success of the May 20 open house, the Lewis County Chamber is looking forward to hosting more in-person events, such as the Lunch and Learn events and Business After Hours.

“What I really hope is for members to help members,” Smith said. This could include discounts or incentives for chamber members who patron fellow chamber businesses.

Smith, a longtime volunteer in the community and former manager of the Jane Lew Truck Stop, said he is ready to get things done in Lewis County, support current businesses, and work to attract new ones.

“The most important thing we have in Lewis County is the businesses we have now,” Smith said during a formal announcement of his hire held at Lambert’s Winery on April 2.

Smith also said he and the board are in the process of revamping memberships.

“We’re working on that to make it more fair,” Smith said, adding they are adding a la carte options. “We want businesses to have more opportunities that meet their needs.”

Smith also said he wants to work to support Lewis County attractions and the tourism industry, ensuring that people traveling the interstate will be enticed to stop and visit those local attractions.

A long-term goal Smith would like to see come to fruition is collaborating with all businesses, including non-profits, toward a common goal, and using different media to promote businesses.

“I’d like to start a podcast with Chamber businesses,” he said, adding that collaboration could even extend to neighboring counties and states.

The Lewis County Chamber of Commerce recently hosted a ribbon cutting for the Weston Town Hub Front Porch on Friday, May 7. Another ribbon cutting was held at Weston’s newest business, Appalachian Oddities, on Friday, May 14.

Current Chamber Board of Directors are Thomas Newbrough, President; Angie Cedeno, Julie Petit, Andre D’Amour, Tina Cunningham, Liz Johnson, Alyssa Lambert, Tracey Queen-Young, Dwaine Doss, Chris Heater, Gina Starett, Greg Cunningham, Heath Haddix, and Joanie Oliverio.
