The Uvalde Area Chamber of Commerce annual awards ceremony, scheduled to start tomorrow, will be broadcast via daily announcements on the chamber’s Facebook page.
Traditionally held as a banquet and awards ceremony, event winners are usually announced and fêted as chamber members dine. Due to COVID-19, this year’s celebration will be held virtually.
The chamber is celebrating 101 years of service, having opened its doors in 1920 and this year’s theme is “Just Roll With It.”
The theme and plans for the celebration during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic were inspired by the Elton John song, “I’m Still Standing,” according to chamber director Regina Santos-Aviles.
“The ongoing pandemic has been a trying time for everyone, and we have all had to adjust on an almost daily basis,” she said. “I would just like to pay tribute to the local business community as a whole. I think Uvalde businesses have rolled the dice and come out on top.”
Santos-Aviles also said she is looking forward to what the next year brings and hopes to host the 2022 chamber banquet in person. Meanwhile, she is working in numerous capacities to help support local businesses, and she invites anyone to visit her at the chamber office, 340 N Getty St.
She said she and chamber board members will visit businesses chosen by voters as winners in the four categories.
Announcements will be made daily, starting tomorrow with best in customer service; Tuesday, rookie business of the year; Wednesday, small business of the year; and Thursday, business of the year.
Best in customer service nominees include First State Bank of Uvalde, Southwest Texas Veterinary Medical Center, Uvalde County Fairplex, Julio’s BBQ and Grill, Bottle ‘N Bag Liquor and Guns, Snap Fitness Uvalde, and B&T Tire.
For rookie business of the year, nominees include Southern Lace Marketplace, Open Range Bakery and Cafe, The Blinged Buck, Tree City Tea and Water, and The Local Fix-On the Go.
For small business of the year, nominees are Sissy’s One Stop, Julio’s BBQ and Grill, The Local Fix-On the Go, B&T Tire, Ofelia A Bartending, and The Blinged Buck.
Business of the year nominees include Broadway 830, Cantu Motor Sports LLC, The Locomotive 501 Ranch and Events, Lancair International, Uvalde Memorial Hospital, H-E-B Uvalde, First State Bank of Uvalde, Southwest Texas Veterinary Medical Center, The Open Range Bakery and Cafe, and Commercial Light & Signs.
Individuals chosen as Uvaldean of the Year and Uvalde Volunteer of the Year are to be notified on March 12, and the chamber will post a video the following week paying tribute to winners and announcing leadership class members and new board members.
