CONNEAUT — The Conneaut Chamber of Commerce has announced the winners of its Chamber Champions awards.

Traditionally, the Chamber Champions and Citizen of the Year would be recognized at the chamber’s dinner meeting in February. That event will not be held this year, Chamber Executive Director Wendy DuBey said in a press release.

“Even though we are unable to gather and celebrate Conneaut’s best and brightest, we still felt it was important to recognize those individuals who made significant contributions to the community,” DuBey said in the release. “We hope to be able to honor our 2020 Chamber Champions and 2020 Citizen of the Year along with the 2021 recipients at our annual dinner in February 2022.”

The President’s Award was given to Randy Skalos for his work on the Haunt on Williams Street, a Halloween display that does not charge a fee for admission, according to the statement. Donations that Skalos receives for the event are donated to the Conneaut Food Pantry.

The chamber’s Professional Achievement Award went to Rick Gaugh. Gaugh, who currently serves on Conneaut City Council, received the award due to his frequent volunteering.

Gaugh volunteered to help people park during D-Day Conneaut, and has spent a significant amount of time working at Malek Park, according to the statement.

The Chamber’s Leadership Award went to Conneaut Creek Float and Fly, a new business that opened in 2020, offering canoe and kayak rides on the Conneaut River and fishing supplies.

The river tours were timely, since families were looking for things to do that were COVID-19 safe, according to the chamber.

The chamber’s Legacy Award was given posthumously to Richard McLaughlin for having a positive impact on the community.

The chamber Citizen of the Year award will be announced in March, DuBey said in an email. Ballots have been mailed out to previous citizens of the year.
