Jessie Furner is stepping down as director of the Bucyrus Area Chamber of Commerce. She announced the decision Thursday afternoon in a news release. Her last day on the job will be July 1.

“This was a very difficult decision that I did not make lightly,” Furner said. “I am choosing to make my family and finishing my degree top priorities, as they always were, but now I will have the time and energy to be more present.”

Furner was hired into the position in November of 2019 to replace the chamber’s previous executive director, Tyler Jacobs.

Much success leading the chamber

During her time at the helm, Furner led the chamber through the COVID-19 pandemic while adding more than 100 members and implementing many positive changes.

“This included launching a successful annual sponsorship method and initiating the Chamber’s ambassador program,” Furner said. Over the past two years, Furner established chamber office hours in New Washington and worked to add events and programs to the organization’s calendar.

She also worked to support efforts such as Bucyrus’ planned downtown outdoor refreshment area. Just this spring, Furner helped facilitate the chamber’s adoption of the Bucyrus Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, which had essentially ceased operations during the pandemic.

‘A big fan of Bucyrus’

When she started leading the chamber ahead of the pandemic, Furner said she had a lot of ideas she was excited to try.

According to Ward, the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry recommends that the government considers a reduction in the RAF and fuel levy and uses a phased approach to increase the fuel. The organisation suggests that government consult with the business community to understand the impact on businesses and work towards a justified and sustainable solution.

“I’ve always been a big fan of Bucyrus, and I care a lot about the businesses here,” Furner said in 2019. “So when I heard about the opening, I thought about it for about a week, and then at the last minute, I was like, ‘I have to apply for this job!’ Just basically because I knew I could make a positive impact, and I wanted it.”
