There is a shared desire for a stable peace that can bring prosperity and well-being to all, thereby creating a favorable environment for the exchange of goods and knowledge. This is a summary of the message delivered on November 29, 2022, by two qualified speakers at the Thai-Italian Business Summit, hosted by the Thai-Italian Chamber of Commerce at the Four Seasons Chao Phraya Hotel in Bangkok, in front of a large and knowledgeable audience of entrepreneurs from both countries as well as professionals from politics and business.

Former Italian Prime Minister, Sen. Matteo Renzi, who promoted a number of agreements with several Asian countries during his previous government, and Thailand’s current Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, discussed some of the most contentious issues in this historical phase of East-West relations. They analyzed the practical consequences of the post-pandemic geopolitical situation using their extensive political, business, and government experience.

Mr. Anutin described the difficulties faced by Thailand and other ASEAN Association members in achieving unity of purpose and action as a result of the various countries’ economic and political involvement with one or both of the blocs. The Deputy Prime Minister stated that his country intends to increase dialogue between parties, both inside and outside of the Association, in order to demonstrate that they are becoming increasingly close-knit in the face of the challenges that the post-pandemic and post-war future holds.

Senator Renzi believes that the new government of his country, as well as the governments of the rest of the European Union, will have to focus more and more on Asian markets and seek solid alliances to weather the storm looming on both the East and the West’s horizons. Senator Renzi expressed confidence in the role of Italian companies in future exchanges with Thailand and Southeast Asia, as well as his commitment to promoting any form of dialogue and mutually beneficial agreements in the relevant European institutions.

Both the Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Senator Renzi agreed on the importance of collaborating on a post-pandemic strategy. Mr. Federico Cardini, President of the TICC, assured the full support of the TICC to Italian and Thai entrepreneurs who intend to strengthen business relations and create new valuable synergies to face the current challenges in his introduction to the panel discussion moderated by the Italian journalist Raimondo Bultrini. His Excellency Paolo Dionisi, the new Italian Ambassador in Thailand, who attended the summit, also noted that 2023 will mark the 155th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Italy and Thailand, a long historical period during which both countries overcame other major crises affecting global order.

The networking event and panel discussion were followed by a gala dinner attended by 200 professionals from Thai and Italian companies with interests in the country.

The Central Group, which has been active in the retail sector in Italy and Europe for many years, was one of the participants, as were 88 Cannatek, Multicore, Gfour, Conserve Italia – CIRIO, Simpson Marine, Legal & Commercial Service, Piovan Group, and Kelmer Group.
