The Egyptian Foundation for the Rescue of Heritage

Egyptian NGO Foundation No. 5191 of 2013 The Egyptian Heritage Rescue Foundation was established in 2013 with the aim of promoting and protecting the Egyptian and regional cultural heritage. Its first task was to provide and design training courses for specialists working in the government sector and relevant institutions in the field of risk preparedness and rapid rescue of cultural heritage in disaster and crisis situations (FACH), in cooperation with the International Center for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM).

Enterprise message

The Foundation’s mission is to address the problems of heritage collections at risk in museums, libraries, archives and cultural heritage sites, as well as in the urban and rural urban setting. Accordingly, the Foundation seeks to participate in a wide range of activities that fall under the academic fields and practical interventions, including documentation and digital recording of museum collections, training of curators and restorers on risk assessment and mitigation methods, as well as the development of heritage buildings for reuse.

Medium term goals

  1. Work on developing and activating laws and legislation that provide protection for cultural heritage in accordance with international conventions ratified by Egypt.
  2. Develop priority plans that promote the reuse of heritage buildings to ensure their sustainability.
  3. Mobilizing citizens and relevant institutions to monitor the performance of those responsible for making decisions as a key factor in protecting national museums and archaeological sites.
  4. Organizing task forces comprising three main members (the restorer, the archaeologist, and the architect) to monitor each museum and archaeological site for any developments affecting the heritage it contains, and coordinate with all concerned authorities.
  5. Digital documentation of all museum collections, in order to prevent thefts, determine responsibilities and ensure the survival of the Egyptian heritage.

 

Long term goals

  1. Develop administrative work and fundraising methods in museum departments, in order to play an effective role in introducing the community to its Egyptian heritage, as well as in promoting education and academic achievements.
  2. Providing advice and specialized services to owners of private heritage collections and owners of historical buildings.
  3. Encouraging investments in the field of heritage, and creating projects that highlight the economic benefits resulting from the provision of protection and appropriate means of preservation and preservation of heritage.
  4. Publish an annual report and a map of the risks surrounding the heritage exposed to it.
