About us

The Chamber of Commerce was originally created under the auspices of the King of Spain, Alfonso XII, through the Queen Regent, Maria Cristina, by way of the Royal Decree of 9th April 1886. It withstood the vicissitudes of history through succeeding transfers of sovereignty from Spain to the United States in 1898, from the United States to the Commonwealth in 1935, and to the Republic of the Philippines in 1946, evidenced in the corresponding names that the Chamber adopted during these periods: from CAMARA DE COMERCIO DE MANILA in 1886; the CAMARA DE COMERCIO DE LAS ISLAS FILIPINAS in 1898; the CAMARA DE COMERCIO FILIPINA in 1903; the CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OF THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS in 1915, during which period a grant of a piece of land to the Chamber was affected by the Government, and the members of the Chamber built its building thereon in 1933.

In 1972, the martial law regime, sought the amalgamation of the Chamber with several groups into a new body, but the Board of Directors and Membership opted to continue its historical mandate alone as the CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OF THE PHILIPPINES FOUNDATION.

Now, then, in order to emphasize, as well as to preserve and maintain the purposes for which the Chamber was formed as the traditional foundation and pillar of business, production and private entrepreneurship in the Philippines, for the promotion of the general economic welfare under the blessings of democratic economic freedom for all, we do hereby ordain these articles adapting and returning to its original name CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OF THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS.
