In May, 1999, the Japan Apparel Industrial Association changed its name to the Japan Apparel Technology and Research Association (JATRA), and, at the same time, through measures such as the establishment of seven new committees, the association has transformed itself to match the times and has made a new start.
The basic purpose of the association remains the same, we put emphasis on the industrial side of apparel and we define our association as a neutral and practical research group related to industry, production, and technology. Accordingly, we shall carry out activities in response to the new era of globalization and development of information technology.
We believe there are three important issues facing the apparel industry in Japan, namely 1) the technology revolution; 2) preservation of the culture of apparel at a time when emphasis is shifting from quantity to quality; and, 3) adaptation to globalization. In order to respond to these issues, exchange and cooperation between “creation”, “industry”, and “business” is increasingly important. It is my strong desire that the new JATRA will serve as a medium for this type of exchange and cooperation.
