Macao has a new Chamber of Commerce for Portuguese-speaking countries
The Portuguese-speaking Countries Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the Greater Bay Area of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau was founded in January 2024, with its headquarters set in Macao. Led by Rodrigo Brum, former Deputy Secretary-General of Forum Macao, the Chamber’s mission is to strengthen trade and economic bonds between nine Portuguese-speaking nations and China. Brum, hailing from Mozambique and deeply rooted in Macao since the 1990s, highlighted the challenges faced by companies from these countries during his tenure at Forum Macao, which spurred the genesis of the Chamber.
Brum emphasized the active involvement of representatives from each member state in the Chamber’s management to address specific hurdles encountered in the Chinese market. One key focus is navigating China’s stringent import regulations, which have historically posed challenges for Portuguese-speaking country companies. Additionally, the Chamber aims to foster dialogue with Macao and Chinese officials to advocate for the needs and challenges faced by these companies, echoing Chinese Premier Li Qiang’s recent commitment to listening to businesses’ struggles. Through enhanced representation and knowledge-sharing initiatives, the Chamber aims to empower companies from Portuguese-speaking countries to navigate trade regulations, attract investments, and facilitate cross-border collaborations more effectively.
